Chelsey is one of the few brave young people I know who took a leap of faith and quit her job to follow her passion. Having travelled the world extensively, it is of no surprise that she decided to start up a tour company (in Cape Town) – Led by Locals. As the name suggests, these Cape Town tours are designed and led by local guides, who give you a true and unique tour like no other. – Tatenda Mark
Chelsey Hale, owner of Led By Locals, talks to Alumni Valley:
The story behind Led By Locals
The idea behind Led by Locals started when I moved to Cape Town last year. I got to know some incredible tour guides in the city with an abundance of local knowledge and skills. I thought it was important that they have a direct hand in designing the routes and content for tours in Cape Town.
Adding to this, I noticed a need for more tours that could offer travellers a unique and refreshing experience, especially something a little different than what they would typically do in the city. This was the idea behind Led by Locals.
The tourism industry can be a hard nut to crack. It takes quite a bit of persistence especially being a new kid on the block.

Led By Local’s Challenges And Accomplishments
A recurring challenge has been getting people to take me seriously. The tourism industry can be a hard nut to crack. It takes quite a bit of persistence especially being a new kid on the block.
My biggest achievement however, was finally getting the site up and running. It is far from perfect but having the platform there, makes it so real and gives me that drive to keep working at it everyday.
Some Entrepreneurial Advice
My advice to those entering the market, is to try and prioritise on the important stuff, and not spread yourself too thin. It is very easy to burn out! Remember, just because you can do everything, doesn’t mean that you should.
Also, as you start your journey in building your brand, always remember to encourage and support your peers. Build up a network of people who can return the goodwill and who will help promote your brand – this is very handy in the long run.
