I met Marihett at the City Bowl Market. Before I had even mentioned Alumni Valley, she explained to me with much enthusiasm the ranges of chilli sauces that she had on display. As she offered me a sample of some of the chillis, she went into great detail about the different natural ingredients that went into making the sauces which were full of flavour. You get a sense of the passion and care that goes into making the sauces – Tatenda Mark.

Marihett’s story:

Johnny Hexburg is a chilli sauce range with a story.

Since our son was 3 he was into fishing and the outdoors. Give him a stick, a brick and a piece of rope and he could play for hours. He was [and still is] a Bear Grylls fanatic.

So, whenever he was playing outside, pretending to be Bear Grylls or in the army, he always had his counter-part Johnny Hexburg with him. His army men were named Johnny Hexburg. His rock band was named Johnny Hexburg, everything was Johnny Hexburg.

When we asked him where he got the name from, he answered, “I made it up”. This is how Johnny Hexburg became a household name to us and this was the inspiration of the Johnny Hexburg chilli sauce range.

As parents, we had a discussion with him and asked him for permission to use his name for the sauces. We are trying to teach him [7 years old now] how to be an entrepreneur. He is actively involved at Farmer markets with selling the sauces.

Traditional and authentic taste is our main goal and the Johnny Hexburg range is exceptionally flavoured with taste to really stand out.

This range of chilli sauces is the most comprehensive range you will find. It is indeed one the most sought after sauces in the market due to the unique blend of chillies, spices and herbs. Not one of the sauces resembles another in taste, all unique with their own characteristics and flavour profiles.

We started with the Johnny Hexburg range November 2016 and have thus far supplied Spar’s in the Helderberg area, butcheries, deli’s and restaurants.

The biggest challenge for us is brand awareness, but I am sure that will come with time! Also, the fact that the sauces are handmade, means we spend a lot of time in the kitchen.
